Sumco Oregon Corp
Although the company recently announced it would move some production to Ohio, its Salem plant will still produce silicon wafers for use in transistors, motor controllers and transformers – made using silicon from computer chips – that are used by transistors, motor controllers, and transformers. Meanwhile, the Ohio facility may prove more cost-effective because its focus will solely be silicon production, while the Salem plant also makes semiconductor equipment and specialized chemicals.
SUMCO officials determined it would be more cost-effective to move some existing operations over to Ohio than compete against it for more work, which means a gradual shutdown at their Salem plant until only a skeleton crew remains to operate it; the decision will likely cause the loss of over 1,300 jobs.
SUMCO has yet to decide how to market the vast expanse of real estate housing two Salem facilities; estimated tax-assessed values range between $242.7 and $250 Million.

Roth’s Fresh Markets of Salem will be sold to Pattison Food Group of Western Canada for an expected sale closing on Oct 26. Under Pattison Food Group ownership, Roth’s will retain its name while current president Michael Roth will step down.
Roth’s stores offer organic and natural food, beverages, and canned meat products. In addition, Certified Angus Beef products and grilling items from Traeger are carried. There is also a floral department that offers flower arrangements and delivery services, as well as catering services available to accommodate weddings, meetings, banquets, and picnics.
Roth’s started in 1962 in Silverton and opened its first Salem-area location three years later. Through expansion throughout the region during the 1970s – including Independence and McMinnville stores – they now maintain nine supermarkets within the Mid-Willamette Valley with an emphasis on local sourcing.
Tom Hoffert, now a Salem commercial real estate broker, worked at Roth’s in Salem as a high schooler during the 1990s. According to Hoffert, Roth’s was known for its emphasis on training and teamwork; Orville Roth would make sure customers picked up two pieces of trash every time they left – which helped the store become known for quality and service, now serving customers across Oregon.
