On Monday night, Uvalde school trustees unanimously approved administrator contracts. This included marketing director Anne Marie Espinoza and former Robb Elementary Principal Mandy Gutierrez, who has been placed on administrative leave following last May’s school shooting incident.
On the board’s agenda were contract renewals for Dalton Elementary principal Margaret Tarski, Norma Hill-Garcia at Dual Language Academy, and Kristen Harrell from Morales Junior High.
Uvalde Community School District’s Executive Director of Student Services and Special Projects,, Norma A. de la Fuente, has over two decades of experience working in education – 17 as an administrator. Since she joined their administration team last December, she has been instrumental in their efforts to increase graduation rates across their school district.
As more children require extra support, the district has also started recruiting teachers with master’s degrees and experience with special needs education. “We want to be able to provide more resources for those students who have more difficulty learning,” stated de la Fuente.
At an earlier meeting Monday, the board approved schematic plans for Robb Elementary’s replacement campus set to open in 2025-26. It will feature two stories and 120,000 square feet, more than double that of its predecessor school, as well as bulletproof glass, door prop alarms, vestibules for visitors outside hallways, secure perimeter fencing, bullet-proof glass bullet-proofing, door prop alarms and bullet-proof perimeter security features such as bullet-proof glass. Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation has already raised 70% of the $60 Million needed for the project’s funding needs.
