Michigan is home to six excellent law schools. There are several excellent law schools in Michigan, including Ave Maria Law School in Ann Arbor, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in Detroit, the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, the Michigan State University College of Law in East Lansing, the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, and Wayne State University Law School in Detroit.
Of course, not every law school in Michigan is the same, so you should take your time and do your research before committing to anyone in particular. Far too many aspiring lawyers, aided by periodicals and fabricated law school rankings, make the wrong decision. This could lead you to overlook several other excellent law schools in Michigan and beyond in favor of the University of Michigan Law School, which has a well-deserved reputation for excellence on a national scale.
When advising prospective law students, I often stress that the quality of their education will be relatively similar regardless of where they choose to enroll. Even while that’s true, “elite” institutions will never admit it. Furthermore, as an attorney who has been in practice for almost a decade, I can promise that your law school’s reputation will swiftly fade into irrelevance in the eyes of potential clients and colleagues. Great lawyers and awful lawyers from prestigious institutions are as familiar to me as great lawyers and terrible lawyers from obscure institutions.
If you live in Michigan and are considering attending law school, you should do some serious research to determine which of the many outstanding options is the most excellent fit for you. You should follow the University of Michigan Law School if landing a high-paying job in Manhattan right after graduation is a top priority. On the other hand, one of the smaller local schools can be ideal if you want to establish a local practice there.
While the meat of your education will be pretty consistent across institutions, your experience will be somewhat different. If you are set on attending a law school in Michigan, you should take the time to visit each institution on your shortlist. You could also talk to some kids to determine their thoughts on the environment. Some law schools are indeed friendlier than others.
Just as no two law students are the same, no two Michigan law schools are the same. Your number one goal should be to find a compatible partner. No matter which Michigan law school you choose, you will spend three years and tens of thousands of dollars on it, so you might as well make the most of it.
I invested countless hours and thousands of dollars into learning about and touring the eleven schools that cut my law school application. I didn’t pick the most selective or prominent law school I was accepted to, but I liked the one that best fits me. I chose wisely, too.
In my ebook, Covert Tactics for Getting Into the Law School of Your Choice, and in the Covert Tactics Law School Newsletter, I explore these and many other issues to help you get into the law school of your choice.
